Athlete retention and attendance calculator

Work out your retention, churn and attendance rates for any period, from your own numbers. The formulas sit beside the results.

Updated . Nothing you type is saved or sent.

How to use it

Enter the athletes active at the start and still active at the end, and add new joiners, bookings, attendance and revenue per athlete if you want those rates too.

Athletes

Of the athletes counted in A.

Left out of retention, so growth does not hide losses.

Sessions

Needs sessions booked (B).

How it works

Retention matches POWA's own definition: the members at the start of a range who are still in at the end, with new athletes left out so growth does not hide losses. Attendance is attended divided by booked, the way attendance by exception counts it.

The letters: A is the athletes active at the start of the period, S is those of them still active at the end, N is new athletes who joined, B is sessions booked, T is sessions attended and R is the average monthly revenue per athlete.

Retention rate
S ÷ A × 100
Churn rate
(A minus S) ÷ A × 100
Athletes lost
A minus S
End headcount
S + N
Net change
(S + N) minus A
Attendance rate
T ÷ B × 100Only when B is entered.
Monthly revenue no longer coming in
(A minus S) × ROnly when R is entered.

A worked example

The numbers are made up.

A = 80, S = 68, N = 10, B = 640, T = 560 and R = $120.

Retention rate
85%
68 ÷ 80 × 100
Churn rate
15%
(80 − 68) ÷ 80 × 100
Athletes lost
12
80 − 68
End headcount
78
68 + 10
Net change
−2
(68 + 10) − 80
Attendance rate
87.5%
560 ÷ 640 × 100
Monthly revenue no longer coming in
$1,440.00
(80 − 68) × $120.00

Limits

There are no benchmarks, and "revenue no longer coming in" assumes each lost athlete would have paid the average; seasonal programs distort short periods.

Inside POWA, athletes under 60% attendance or training completion over 30 days are listed first; that is a product setting, not an industry benchmark.
